Mary Kerwin, CSW, SW

Psychotherapist
NC
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than three decades of experience helping individuals and couples navigate some of life’s most difficult and meaningful seasons. Throughout my career, I have worked in a wide range of clinical settings and with people from many different backgrounds and life experiences. I earned my degree from SUNY Buffalo, graduating with honors, and am licensed to practice in both New York and North Carolina. My professional background includes extensive work with active-duty military members and their families, community mental health therapist, participation on community crisis boards and in state-level crisis planning, and experience across outpatient and behavioral health settings. I have also been qualified as an expert witness in both state and federal court proceedings. My areas of professional interest include anxiety, depression, relationships, parenting, fertility and pregnancy, grief, life transitions, and the challenges women often encounter while balancing relationships, family, work, and their own well-being. Over the years, I have completed advanced training in a number of evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Prolonged Exposure, and EMDR. Above all, I value the opportunity to work with people as individuals—not simply as a diagnosis or a collection of symptoms. After more than 30 years in this field, I continue to believe deeply in people's capacity for growth, healing, and meaningful change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe therapy works best when you feel comfortable enough to be yourself. You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to say, where to begin, or even what you hope will change. We can figure that out together. My style is warm, conversational, and collaborative. I listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and offer feedback rather than simply sitting back and expecting you to do all the talking. There is always room for humor, reflection, practical problem-solving, and sometimes simply having a place to say the things you haven’t been able to say anywhere else. I tailor therapy to the person in front of me rather than relying on one approach for everyone. Depending on your needs, I may draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and other evidence-based approaches. We may look at patterns in your thoughts, relationships, and experiences while also focusing on what can help you feel better and move forward in your life now. I won’t expect you to have everything figured out, and I won’t tell you how you “should” feel. My role is to help you better understand yourself, recognize patterns that may be keeping you stuck, build on your strengths, and make changes that feel meaningful and realistic for you. Therapy can involve difficult conversations, but it doesn’t have to feel clinical or intimidating. My hope is that our work feels genuine, useful, and deeply human—and that over time you begin to feel more confident navigating your life in a way that feels like your own.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, what has been happening in your life, and what you would like to be different. I’ll ask some questions about your history, relationships, current concerns, and the things that are most important to you. You don’t need to prepare anything or have a perfectly defined goal before we meet. From there, we’ll work together to identify what you would like to focus on and what might be most helpful. Sessions are conversational and generally begin with what feels most important to you that day. At times, we may explore past experiences or recurring patterns; at others, we may focus on something happening in your life right now. I don’t believe therapy needs to follow the exact same formula every week. Some sessions may involve deeper reflection, while others may be more practical and focused on problem-solving, coping strategies, communication, or making a specific decision. I’ll ask questions, offer observations and feedback, and help you make connections that may be difficult to see when you’re in the middle of things. We’ll also check in along the way about how therapy is going and whether our work is helping you move toward the changes you want to make. My goal is for you to leave sessions not only feeling heard and understood, but also with greater clarity about yourself and a sense of where you want to go next.
