Getting to know Mary Zupancic Nagashima

My name is Mary Nagashima, and I am a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) based in Northern California, working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with adolescents and adults, specializing in trauma and the anxiety and depression that often accompany it, using mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, BrainSpotting, and EMDR. I earned my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from National University. My approach is client-centered; I work with each client differently depending on your needs. I most frequently use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness training, as both modalities help me and the client build a shared understanding of their reality and allow us to work together to chart a path toward reducing symptoms and moving toward a more joyful life. On a daily basis, so much is demanded of us, and life frequently moves too fast to take care of ourselves and others. My approach is to help you slow down, get in touch with your inner voice, and assist you in processing and releasing painful or traumatic experiences. This process establishes a more grounded approach to living in the present moment and often reduces anxiety and depressive symptoms. My communication style is calm, accommodating, and personable. I want my clients to feel comfortable talking with me about anything, and I do not judge. Each of us is unique and makes sense of the world and our place in it in our own way. I pride myself on my ability to listen without judgment. I had a difficult childhood and always wanted someone to talk to who could help me make sense of my life. I majored in Psychology in college, recognizing that understanding myself and the people I come in contact with would always be helpful. After graduating, life took an unexpected turn—moving to Japan, raising a family, and working in business. After 25 years, I returned to the U.S. and remembered my earlier dream of becoming a therapist to help others on their journey.
