Matthew Gahagan, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
My name is Matthew Gahagan, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) located in the East Bay Area, CA. I serve clients statewide via telehealth. I work primarily with adults, specializing in depression, anxiety, and stress. I use a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and solutions-focused approaches to help my clients reach their goals. I employ an Integrative Therapy approach, which allows me to draw from various theoretical orientations to best meet my clients where they are. Some of the approaches I utilize include CBT, DBT, Person-centered Therapy, Solutions-focused Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. I understand that clients face different challenges at different times, and this flexibility enables me to personalize interventions effectively. While I have experience with many client populations, I primarily work with adults (18 years and older) navigating situational challenges, life transitions, and functional impairments in their daily lives. These challenges often manifest as symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, fear, and discomfort. My communication style is empathetic, direct, and understanding. My goal is for clients to feel heard and understood. I strive to create a space where clients can share openly without fear of judgment, knowing they are the experts of their own life experience. I found great meaning in understanding and helping others throughout my life. In high school and early college, I sought a career that would allow me to support people moving through life's challenges. After completing a bachelor's degree in Psychology, I earned my Master's in Counseling from Saint Mary's College of California, which further prepared me to serve my clients with skill and compassion.
