Getting to know Matthew Mcgiffen

I have been a practicing social worker and clinical therapist for over ten years. I specialize in working with adults of all ages who struggle with depression, anxiety, grief, intrusive thoughts, impulse control issues, self-harm, and thoughts of suicide. I also have extensive experience in mental health crisis support. If you struggle to get through the day or just need a little support, please reach out. We can work together to help you build on your strengths and work towards changing your life for the better.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I create a warm and structured environment where I use a holistic and strengths-based approach to help clients learn to manage difficult emotions, cope with major life changes, and work towards personal goals. I also provide as-needed crisis support for clients outside of my regular appointment hours.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During an initial session we identify the first challenge you would like to address, explore strengths that will help you meet your goal, practice skills that can help you manage any immediate distress, and develop a plan for treatment going forward. In follow-up sessions we will explore triggers and past experiences that contribute to your mental health challenges, identify and confront unhelpful thought patterns, brainstorm ways to utilize your existing strengths to achieve your goals, and continue to build on your repertoire of coping and problem solving skills. At the end of each session I will provide reading material and/or homework to help you continue working towards your goals at your own pace outside of sessions.
