Getting to know Melanie Genova

Hi! My name is Melanie Genova. I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker with a Master's in Social Work from The University of Akron and a Bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University. I approach therapy from an attachment theory and Cognitive Behavioral perspective. I have worked in social services with individuals and families since 1995 and have provided outpatient counseling since 2010. I specialize in counseling individuals, couples, and families, and I practice Christian faith-integrated counseling for those seeking to incorporate their faith into their therapeutic work. My approach My primary approach to therapy is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) principles. This approach explores thought processes and how they impact feelings and behaviors. Through various strategies, we work together to challenge and replace negative and maladaptive thoughts to create changes in emotions and behavior. CBT is effective for many mental and behavioral health challenges. Additionally, I have extensive experience working with couples and families. I explore and address attachment wounds and styles with my clients to promote healing from past hurts and traumas, helping them move toward secure attachment and healthier relationship interactions. We also focus on skill-building to improve connection, communication, and problem-solving. My focus I work closely with adults dealing with mental health, adjustment disorders, life transitions, problem-solving, grief, and more; teens ages 12-18; parents and children, including adoption; and couples. My communication style I create a casual environment where clients feel comfortable coming as they are. While I challenge you to dig deep and work hard, I maintain a judgment-free zone where you can reveal your true self without fear. And all my clients will tell you-we use humor whenever we can!
