Getting to know Merisa Hannington

Do you find yourself doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result? Are you struggling to find balance in your life? Do you feel like there's a part of you that has died and hasn't come back to life? Hi, my name is Merisa. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Registered Art Therapist, and artist. I help highly functioning adults manage their stressors and find more balance in life. As an art therapist, we use art as a communication tool to express emotions, process trauma, and relieve stress. Many of my clients are not willing to do art therapy, and that's okay too! Talking is just as effective. If you come from a family that didn't talk about feelings or avoided conflict, it's likely that talking about your emotions isn't easy. I am here to help ease you into it. Therapy is like exercising-you will be working new muscles, and I'm here to help you get stronger. Professional Background: I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts, minoring in Psychology, in 2014. I earned my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy with an emphasis in Art Therapy from Phillips Graduate University in 2016. I have always been creative and passionate about helping others, which led me to pursue art therapy and becoming an LMFT. I have worked at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, providing therapy to patients and families; multiple addiction treatment centers; and as a school counselor. I have been in recovery for years and have both personal and professional experience working with teens, adults, and families in substance use and mental health treatment. I am grateful to help you with addiction, anxiety, PTSD, low self-esteem, and relationship issues.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy will consist of exploring how internal and external conflicts impact your relationship to self, others, and the world. The goal is for knowledge of self to be gained and to learn to relate to self and others more effectively and authentically. Together, we will help you to identify your thinking patterns, emotions, and behaviors and new coping skills will be learned. I will help to deconstruct and challenge thoughts that you might have about the world, teach you how to regulate feelings, and explore new, healthy ways of being.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
