Michael Kellum, LCSW

Psychotherapist
PA
At OtherKind, I specialize in therapy for anxiety, relationship challenges, grief and loss, and burnout. I work with self-aware adults who understand what is not working but still feel stuck in patterns that are difficult to change. You may struggle to step away from work without feeling guilty, return to the same conflicts in an important relationship, or feel overwhelmed by responsibilities that leave little room for your own needs. You may also be navigating grief, trauma, or a major transition and trying to understand what moving forward looks like now. My style is mindful, relational, empathetic, and goal-oriented. Clients and colleagues often describe me as genuine, engaging, accountable, and easy to relate to. I aim to create a space where you can be honest while also being thoughtfully questioned and challenged. I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and a person-in-environment perspective. We consider your personal patterns along with the relationships, cultural background, work environment, and social pressures shaping your experience. Our work may include examining unhelpful thinking patterns, developing skills for difficult emotions, strengthening coping strategies, and making planned changes that reflect your values. The goal is for greater self-understanding to become useful in the conversations you have, the decisions you make, and the way you respond when familiar difficulties return.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is genuine, engaged, and compassionate. I care about building a relationship where you can talk honestly without feeling that you need to present a polished version of yourself. You can bring in frustration, uncertainty, mixed feelings, or something you have not yet figured out how to explain. You can expect empathy alongside thoughtful questions and honest feedback. I will listen closely, but I will also share what I notice and invite you to consider perspectives that may be difficult to see on your own. My role is not simply to agree with you or tell you what to do. It is to help you examine what is happening and make choices that fit your life. I value your independence. You have a say in what we work on, what matters most, and which changes you are ready to consider. I will not assume that my understanding of your experiences is complete, especially when it comes to your identity, relationships, or the expectations you are navigating. Supportive accountability is an important part of my approach. We can take your goals seriously without turning therapy into another place where you feel judged for falling short. When following through is difficult, that gives us something to understand and work with. You do not need to feel completely ready for change before starting. It is possible to want things to be different and still have reasons for holding on to what is familiar. There is room to talk openly about both.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We begin by understanding what brought you to therapy now. Early sessions give us space to discuss your concerns, the circumstances surrounding them, what you have already tried, and what you hope to get from treatment. We also explore what is working in your life and where you already have support. Together, we establish a focus for our work. Rather than stopping at a broad goal like “feel less stressed,” we discuss what improvement would look like in your daily life. That might mean being more present outside of work, approaching a difficult conversation differently, or feeling more able to make a decision you have been putting off. In ongoing sessions, we connect that focus to current experiences. We may look closely at a recent situation, examine the thoughts, emotions, and responses involved, and identify where a different approach might be useful. Depending on what you need, we may practice a skill, work through competing priorities, or spend time processing an experience that deserves more attention. When helpful, we agree on something to explore between appointments. This could involve noticing a recurring pattern, practicing a skill, or trying a small change in an everyday situation. What you learn helps guide the next session, including when an approach feels difficult or does not help. We revisit your goals and your experience of therapy as the work develops. We look at what is changing, what remains difficult, and whether our approach needs to shift. The structure gives us direction without making your needs fit a rigid plan.
