Hi there, I'm Michael! Hi, this is Michael Matthews, LMFT, CRC, and I’m a person with a disability. I have 36 years of clinical experience—16 in rehabilitating the mentally disabled and 20 as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I earned my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Saint Mary’s College of California. I am client-centered and careful in listening and understanding what my clients are going through. I come from a dysfunctional alcoholic family with trauma and loss, so I understand mental health issues from both the outside and inside. I have completed 11,000 hours of counseling and therapy experience with people from all walks of life. I lived in Berkeley, California, and worked at the Ed Roberts Campus, the only true center for the disabled. I have 12 years of experience in college at Humboldt State and as an environmentalist saving the tallest trees in the world, the coastal redwoods. I’m aware of political, social, and world issues, graduating from Humboldt in Political Science. My father was the manager of the Social Security Administration, and my mom was spiritual with 13 years in AA recovery. They taught my five siblings and me about caring for each other, compassion, and advocating for people—especially those with disabilities. I am Solution-Focused, trained in Trauma Therapy and Family Systems, and a Jungian Therapist who works with spiritual issues regardless of beliefs. There is an important requirement in 2022 with the apparent intolerance coming from the Trump side of our world. I care about everyone I work with, whether I am fond of them or not. I noted on my Profile Page that I am funny and serious about using joy, fun, opening up, and enjoying life—and even therapy. Finally, I am a Reality Therapy-based therapist, which means helping clients in pain deal with real, traumatic, despairing, meaning-taken realities (like child abuse or death).
