Getting to know Dr. Michael Serrano

**Before your appointment is confirmed, we’ll have a free 15-minute consultation to make sure we’re a good fit and to talk through what you need.** Feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or like you’re carrying more than you can manage alone? You don’t have to figure it out by yourself. I work with adults navigating depression, anxiety, and the stress that comes with major life changes, demanding jobs, relationship strain, and loss. Many of the people I see are high-functioning on the outside but exhausted, worried, or numb on the inside. In our work together, you’ll have a space where you can speak openly without judgment. I’ll listen closely, help you make sense of what you’re experiencing, and work with you to build a plan that fits your goals and your life. Depending on what you need, that may include practical tools for managing anxious thoughts and low mood (CBT and DBT), deeper work on patterns and past experiences (psychodynamic and trauma-informed approaches), and a culturally responsive lens that honors who you are and where you come from. My goal isn’t just to help you feel better in the short term, but to help you understand yourself more fully and move forward with confidence. I hold a PhD in Social Welfare from Yeshiva University and an MSW from Hunter College (CUNY). If you’re ready to take the first step, I’d be glad to meet you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our first meeting is simply a conversation. There’s nothing to prepare and no “right” way to start. I’ll ask what brought you in, what’s been weighing on you, and what you’re hoping will be different. Mostly, I’ll listen. Together, we’ll begin to map out what’s contributing to your stress, what’s been helping you cope so far, and what might help more. By the end of the session, you’ll have a clearer sense of how we’d work together and a first step toward feeling better. If we’re not the right fit, I’ll say so and help you find someone who is.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I don’t treat symptoms in isolation. Stress rarely comes from one place, so I look at the whole picture: your work, relationships, health, family, history, and the pressures you’re carrying day to day. From there, we’ll build a plan that fits your life rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol. Early on, we’ll choose two or three goals to anchor our work. That gives us a clear sense of direction and a way to notice progress along the way. Beyond those goals, each session is yours. Some weeks you’ll want to dig into something specific; other weeks you’ll need to talk through what just happened. Both are welcome. I’ll meet you where you are, not where a treatment manual says you should be.

Although this was a virtual appointment, I felt like I was in a safe space, I felt comfortable enough to open up and share my experiences. Michael Serrano is a great listener as well as a great counselor. Very glad I decided to seek therapy!
Michael is great. He really listens to understand, and gives me clarity on the situations occurring in my life. He draws on past conversations very well, and gives positive reinforcement that has me looking forward to our sessions.
Very relaxed environment, first session we just went over some breathing and hand exercises, I liked his attitude and felt like I could at least tell him about basic problems. Positive first therapy experience.
Great listener! I would definitely come back.

Michael is very communicative via email and the phone. He booked me right away and offered an immediate appointment. When I met with him, he was comforting, showed empathy and he was very patient. I felt a lot better after I left Michael. I look forward to our sessions.
