Michael States, LMFT Hello, it’s nice to see you. Yes, my name really is Michael, and no, my parents did not want a boy. I specialize in working with individuals and family members facing medical, chronic, and life-threatening illness, along with a broad spectrum of other significant life changes and challenges. My commitment is to address the breadth of individual and family needs across all stages and phases of an illness or other non-medical life transitions. My work includes 34 years of experience applying self-awareness through psychotherapy, mindful exploration, and, where appropriate, visualization and guided imagery to manage pain, minimize treatment side effects, reduce stress, and improve quality of life. I earned my Master’s in Counseling from Antioch University, which laid the foundation for my clinical approach and dedication to holistic care. In my personal and professional experience, I know each individual has their own inner knowledge of what is true for them. My job is to assist you in finding and exploring this without an agenda of “how someone should make the journey.” There is no one “right way” or recipe. I am a tour guide helping you access the place within that knows what resonates as true for you. Through our work together, I will be a crucible to hold whatever is happening without judgment. “Michael is a staunch advocate of online therapy.” Well before it became mainstream, beginning in 2002, I participated in multiple research projects exploring online therapy’s efficacy. I facilitated various online groups for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, parents of teens with cancer, and other diagnosis-specific groups, ensuring patients could receive quality care beyond traditional therapy. For more than 21 years, I served as Clinical Program Director of The Wellness Community-West Los Angeles, the founding Wellness Community, now called Cancer Support Community, where I facilitated over 8,000 groups for cancer patients.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
