Mike Bellamy, LCSW

Mike Bellamy, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NJ
I work with adults and adolescents struggling with fear, shame, anxiety, and depression related to trauma, LGBTQIA issues, sexually nonconforming behaviors, relationship challenges, and life transitions. With more than 17 years of experience as a clinical social worker and a Master’s in Social Work from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, I understand the courage it takes to ask for help. I engage with you through open and direct dialogue to create a collaborative partnership. Together, we define your objectives and obstacles and develop a plan to take the first steps toward living a more exciting, fulfilling, and meaningful life. You deserve to feel accepted, capable, and loved for who you are. Fear and shame aren’t your only options. Before becoming a social worker, I spent over 20 years in sales and marketing, so I know firsthand how many messages in the white heteronormative patriarchy can trigger anxiety, depression, destructive behaviors, and self-loathing. We live in a bigoted world. Having traveled the globe and lived as part of a disenfranchised group, I bring a compassionate, non-judgmental perspective on both traditional and non-traditional relationships and lifestyles. It would be an honor to help you identify your strengths and challenges and support you in claiming your victories.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My role as a social worker is influenced by my identity as a queer male psychotherapist. I also have extensive knowledge of the sexually non-conforming or kinky community. This has deepened my compassion for gender-sexual experiences and those facing challenges in their intimate relationships.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A session with me is like a conversation with a purpose, a conversation you might have with a friend when asking for some feedback; only with my therapist hat on there is more expertise and emphasis on keeping on subject. I usually start a session with a minute of small talk, a check in on your emotional state and any significant events that might have taken place since our last session, and then move to more extensive exploration of the issues you bring to therapy. My sessions almost always include a fair amount of humor, sometimes of course, because of the subject matter, a little on the dark side. I believe humor is healing. Sessions generally end with a short summary or a brief reflection on a particular learning moment.

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Initial session: $175 for 53 minutes
Ongoing session: $175 for 53 minutes
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork

More information on payments and coverage

In New York State only, I am insured through Headway with: Cigna, Oxford, Aetna, United Healthcare, Oscar Health, and Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. In New Jersey, Florida, Michigan, and Arkansas I have a biller, Advekit, that will submit the bills to your insurance company on your behalf; and you will only pay for your portion of the out of network expense. You will never have to pay the full amount of therapy and then wait to get reimbursed.
