Monica Thompson, LCSW

Monica Thompson, LCSW

Psychotherapist
VA
My path to who I am today-a culturally responsive, integrative, and creative practitioner-was a journey of becoming the change I sought in the world. As a seasoned medical social worker with a Master's in Social Work from City University of New York, Hunter College, I recognized a particular need for therapists dedicated to supporting those who constantly face discrimination and health disparities. Four years ago, I founded Clinicians of the Diaspora, through which I have promoted access to equitable mental health care for over 100 clients. I have found a unique niche in supporting highly successful Black women, who face distinct challenges. I strive to create a safe and empowering space where they can explore their experiences, navigate their identities, and address emotional or psychological barriers. I am excited to expand this reach by joining Grow Therapy.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Building a strong therapeutic relationship is crucial to the work I do. I prioritize active listening, creating a non-judgmental space, and employing reflective processing to ensure clients feel heard and understood. Additionally, I find value in lovingly challenging limiting beliefs and behaviors and empowering clients to explore new perspectives and possibilities. I also like to connect the client to how their current circumstance and mindset could show up physiologically, using Chakras as a metric for their possible somatic responses. As a Reiki practitioner, this infusing of both clinical practice with energetic connection has been highly effective.
