Sometimes life presents us with challenges, losses, or times of transition that feel overwhelming. If you are going through such a time, I will work with you to help you find meaning, direction, and a strengthened sense of self, whatever your circumstances may be. Each of us has inner wisdom, and I will help you find and listen to it. Challenges that feel insurmountable can be doors to growth, and we will open those doors together. In working with clients, I listen patiently and empathically, with attention to their hopes as well as their struggles. I use techniques from several therapeutic approaches, including identifying and shifting negative thought patterns, mindfulness practices, dreamwork, body awareness, and the use of expressive arts. I adapt my approach to your individual needs and perspective.

Getting to know Nancy Gump

What should a new client know about working with you?

In my practice, I work with adult clients who are experiencing major life changes and transitions. These include becoming a parent, going through a divorce or separation, losing a loved one, changing jobs, facing an empty nest, illness, retirement, and more. I help people who are experiencing anxiety or depression amid changes both large and small. Sharing your fears, frustrations, and hopes in a nonjudgmental and caring relationship can deepen your self-understanding and give you the support you need to move forward. It is my priority to create a safe and supportive atmosphere and to communicate clearly and honestly. Through my early studies in the healing arts and the psychology of world religions, it became increasingly clear to me that psychotherapy was the most practical and effective path for me to take in order to help others. This conviction deepened when I learned through a difficult time in my own life what a healing gift psychotherapy can be. It is a great privilege to accompany clients as they grow in confidence and find meaning and direction in their lives.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Psychotherapy is a partnership. As you tell me about your life, I will listen reflectively and with empathy. In our time together, I will help you clarify your deepest needs and goals, so that you can become more of who you are meant to be. In our first session, I will ask you what brings you to therapy. I understand it is sometimes hard to know where to begin. Before the session, you can think about how to describe not only what is troubling you, but also what you hope for from the process of psychotherapy. I will ask questions about your current circumstances, as well as about the people and events that have led you to where you are now in your life. We will proceed one step at a time, in a partnership dedicated to supporting your growth and well-being.
