Getting to know Phyllis Lam

I work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, and major life transitions. I specialize in supporting clients experiencing childhood trauma, emotional neglect, family conflict, burnout, perfectionism, low self-esteem, and challenges related to identity and relationships. Having lived in Hong Kong and New York, I bring a culturally informed perspective to my work and understand how culture, family expectations, and identity can shape emotional well-being. I provide psychotherapy in English and Chinese, supporting immigrants, Asian Americans, people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and clients navigating multicultural identity and complex family dynamics. I integrate Psychodynamic, Relational, CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed approaches to tailor treatment to each client's experiences and goals. I help clients gain insight into emotional patterns, strengthen coping skills, improve relationships, and create meaningful change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, and you don't have to have everything figured out before you begin. My goal is to create a warm, supportive space where you feel safe to be yourself, feel heard, and explore what matters most to you. I'll meet you with warmth, curiosity, and honesty, offering thoughtful insight and practical support along the way. Together, we'll work toward greater self understanding, stronger relationships, and lasting, meaningful change at a pace that feels right for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After you book your appointment, I will reach out to schedule an initial consultation call at a time that works best for you. This first conversation is a chance for us to discuss what brings you to therapy, what you are hoping to work on, and whether we feel like a good fit. In our sessions, we will begin by understanding your experiences, concerns, and goals while creating a pace that feels comfortable for you. Together, we will explore patterns, challenges, and opportunities for growth while building greater insight, confidence, and healthier ways of navigating life and relationships. Therapy is a collaborative process, and my goal is to provide a supportive space where you feel heard, respected, and encouraged throughout your journey.
