Rita McKinney, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Rita! My name is Rita I. Mckinney, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) based in sunny San Diego, California. I provide telehealth services to anyone located in California. I work with individuals (teens and adults) and specialize in anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and life transitions. I earned my Master’s in Counseling from San Diego State University, which laid the foundation for my passion and skills in mental health care. My approach My approach to therapy is tailored to the needs of each client I work with. I am guided by Structural Family Therapy lenses but often use tools from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), and other modalities to help my clients create goals that get them closer to the fulfilled lives they want to experience. My focus I have found that my approach to therapy is a good fit for working with teens and adults who may be dealing with symptoms of depression and anxiety brought on by life transitions and relationships. My focus is to help clients increase their emotional toolbox skills so that they can navigate the transitions life brings them. My communication style My communication style is warm, empathic, and personable. I want my clients to feel accepted, welcome, and heard as we work together to reach their goals. I pride myself on always providing a safe and non-judgmental environment for my clients. My journey to mental healthcare Since I was a kid, I always knew I wanted to work in a career where I could help people. As a child, I wanted to be a pediatrician; however, in college, I discovered psychology and was drawn to the mental health field. People always told me I was a good listener, so it was only natural for me to go into Marriage and Family Therapy. I enjoy hearing my clients report that they feel they are living the best version of the life they want to live.
