Robert Stanford, LCPC, MA

Psychotherapist
IL
I am the co-owner and lead psychotherapist at Waterbrook Therapy, Inc. As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Illinois and an Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) member, I am deeply committed to helping individuals navigate their emotional and spiritual well-being. I hold graduate degrees in Pastoral Counseling and Religious Studies from Loyola University Chicago and Chicago Theological Seminary, and my passion for understanding the connection between spirituality and mental health has shaped my academic journey and career. The relationships I built throughout my life, especially in young adulthood, profoundly impacted me. They provided a safe space to begin exploring and healing from my wounds. These relationships were lifelines, encouraging me to pursue my education and professional training. My time at Loyola University, in particular, allowed me to combine my clinical psychology and spirituality interests, deepening my understanding of how they intersect. After earning my degree, I began working as a youth counselor for a nonprofit organization in the same neighborhood where I grew up. It was there that I witnessed firsthand the barriers to mental health care, the stigma surrounding mental illness, and the lasting effects of intergenerational racialized trauma. This experience solidified my commitment to increasing access to compassionate, culturally responsive mental health support. Later, I served as the director of counseling services at a church on the South Side of Chicago, where I fully integrated my understanding of faith and emotional well-being to support individuals and families. This role also allowed me to educate communities about mental health and the importance of a balanced, healthy spirituality. Inspired by the success of this approach and a desire to serve clients in a more personal and independent capacity, I founded Waterbrook Therapy, Inc.
