Psychotherapist

Therapy works best when you can actually be yourself in the room. My approach is collaborative, direct, and human. I work with adults, teens, and couples who may look like they are holding things together on the outside while dealing with overthinking, anxiety, self-doubt, relationship stress, ADHD, difficult life transitions, or patterns that keep repeating despite knowing better. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). My work is grounded in Reality Therapy and Person-Centered Therapy, with evidence-based strategies drawn from CBT, DBT, ACT, CPT, and motivational interviewing when they fit the person in front of me. I do not believe therapy should feel like someone simply nodding back at you or giving generic advice. We will work to understand what is happening, identify the patterns underneath it, and make practical changes you can carry into daily life. Clients who tend to work well with me appreciate being able to think out loud, use humor, ask questions, and receive feedback without feeling judged. I am comfortable gently challenging patterns, while respecting that change has to make sense for you. You do not need the perfect explanation for what is wrong or a polished goal for therapy. Sometimes we start by sorting through what feels off, what has become exhausting, or where you keep getting stuck. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, stress, men's mental health, LGBTQIA+ concerns, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, and major life changes. I also enjoy working with first-time therapy clients, professionals, college students, and people who want both insight and practical skill-building. I offer in-person counseling by appointment in Alton, Illinois, as well as virtual therapy throughout Illinois, with evening and weekend availability. If you are ready to spend less time carrying everything in your head and start making meaningful changes in daily life, I would be glad to work with you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You do not need to come to therapy knowing exactly what you want to talk about or having everything organized beforehand. Sessions with me are conversational and collaborative, and we can start with whatever feels most relevant that day. I am an active therapist. I will ask questions, offer observations, help connect patterns, and sometimes challenge you when I notice something that may be keeping you stuck. At the same time, I do not believe in pushing change before you are ready or forcing every conversation into a predetermined structure. Some sessions may focus more on understanding where a reaction or pattern comes from. Others may be more practical, with us working through a decision, communication issue, coping strategy, or specific situation happening in your life. Humor is welcome, questions are encouraged, and you are allowed to tell me when something does not fit. My goal is for therapy to feel like a place where you can think honestly, understand yourself more clearly, and leave with something meaningful to carry into life outside the session.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first few sessions are usually focused on getting a fuller picture of what has been happening, what you would like to change, and the factors that may be contributing to what you are experiencing. We will discuss current concerns, relevant history, relationships, daily functioning, strengths, and what you hope to get from therapy. From there, we develop treatment goals together and adjust them as therapy progresses. After the initial assessment, sessions become more focused on what is currently happening in your life and how it connects to the larger patterns we have identified. Depending on what you need, a session might involve processing a recent experience, examining a recurring pattern, practicing a specific skill, working through a decision, or identifying something to try differently between sessions. I also regularly check whether therapy is moving in a useful direction rather than assuming the original plan should remain unchanged. I approach diagnosis as a clinical tool, not as the entirety of how I understand someone. When a diagnosis is appropriate, I consider your symptoms, how long they have been occurring, their impact on daily functioning, and the broader context in which they developed. Sometimes the clearest diagnosis is apparent early, while other situations require more time and observation. I am comfortable using a provisional diagnosis when appropriate and revisiting it as additional information becomes available. When relevant, I will also explain how I am understanding your symptoms and why a particular diagnosis or treatment direction makes sense. The goal is for you to understand the process rather than simply having a label placed in your chart.
