I practice art therapy and therapeutic art. What is the difference between art therapy and therapeutic art? "Art therapy" indicates that we are using art making to work with a mental health diagnosis and is sometimes called "clinical" work. "Therapeutic art" focuses on other "non-clinical" goals.* As a Registered Art Therapist, Provisional (ATR-P), and Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPC-A), I have received Master’s level training on how to use art materials therapeutically, in addition to the standard training for licensed professional counselors. I obtained my Master’s in Art Therapy with an Emphasis in Counseling from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. I also completed my graduate practicum and internship at The Art Station in Fort Worth, Texas, where I worked with clients from early elementary to older adult with a wide range of backgrounds and reasons for art therapy. * Please be aware that insurance typically does not cover non-clinical work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I use a person-centered and trauma-informed approach to art therapy to walk alongside clients in their personal journeys to become who they are designed to be. I approach all clients from a place of compassion and non-judgement. My art therapy practice focuses on the role of empathy in establishing safety, secure relationship, and a feeling of being truly heard and seen, all of which are vital to healing and growth. I acknowledge that healing doesn’t always mean a return to the way things were before the problems began. Sometimes healing is being able to make progress in the midst of struggles. My role is to walk alongside clients in this process.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I begin with an intake appointment, during which we'll review all intake paperwork and practice policies as well as collaboratively set goals. I may also ask you to complete an art activity using specific materials. This in-person review gives me a wider and deeper picture than intake forms can provide. It also allows you to express any concerns or questions you may have. Although I always aim to complete this process within the first session, it may take an additional session. After the intake process is complete, I will introduce art interventions customized to you. This can include a variety of art materials and can have multiple purposes according to your reason(s) for therapy. Potential examples include: us getting to know one another, clarifying beliefs or goals, processing emotions, or making decisions.
