Getting to know Ruth Owen

I am a licensed mental health counselor in Florida with a diverse background that includes child welfare work, behavior analysis, academic settings, and mental health counseling. I enjoy helping children, adolescents, and adults navigate the difficulties they face in life. My approach I want clients to feel heard and understood while helping them identify the issues causing the most challenges. Together, we set goals and develop strategies to achieve them. I typically use cognitive behavioral and solution-focused techniques blended with a client-centered approach. My focus I have extensive experience working with teens and their families and also enjoy supporting adults through transitions such as death, divorce, retirement, and other stressful life changes. My communication style I strive to create a comfortable, safe, and confidential environment where clients can express their feelings without judgment. Previous clients have appreciated this nonjudgmental space while also feeling that I am honest and committed to helping them become the best version of themselves. My journey to mental healthcare I earned my Master’s in Counseling from the University of South Florida. My undergraduate major was psychology. My first job was with Boley Manor during the State’s phase-out of long-term care in State Mental Hospitals. I spent my days taking group home residents to community settings to relearn social skills. Later, I worked as a foster care counselor and protective investigator, supporting families and children recovering from abuse and neglect. I helped parents overcome challenges and develop skills to parent more effectively. Pursuing my master’s degree led me to the school system, where I became aware of the many children in need of support services who were not receiving them.
