Ryan Thom, LMFT

Ryan Thom, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
My name is Ryan Thom, and I am a licensed Marriage Family Therapist. I obtained my Master's degree in Counseling with an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, one of the few schools that still focuses on psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy. I believe people have a story to tell, and sometimes understanding our story means grounding it in the shared human experience, which includes archetype, metaphor, and narrative. More than anything, studying within the psychoanalytic and psychodynamic framework has taught me that you need an abundance of language to sort things out-more than just saying, “hmmmm… how does that make you feel?” While I love psychodynamic language, I realize we live in an evidence-based world where CBT and DBT are most often used. I believe evidence-based therapies help us systematically achieve results through incremental progress, supporting discipline. Yet, we use poetic language and narrative to understand the spirit, to find reason enough to get out of bed, and later to tell our epic stories of how we healed, how we slayed the dragons in our lives, and how we will live happily ever after.
