Salwa Murshed, MA

Psychotherapist
418 77th St, Brooklyn, NY
I’m a Mental Health Counselor with a Limited Permit (MHC-LP) who works with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic stress, relationship challenges, life transitions, low self-esteem, and difficulty managing emotions. You may be functioning on the outside but still feel overwhelmed, stuck in your head, emotionally drained, or frustrated by patterns you keep repeating. Maybe you understand where some of those patterns come from but aren’t sure how to actually change them. My goal is to help you understand what’s underneath what you’re experiencing while also giving you practical tools to create change in your everyday life. My approach is trauma-informed, holistic, and collaborative. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), DBT-informed skills, somatic therapy techniques, mindfulness, psychodynamic therapy, attachment-based therapy, IFS/parts work, and solution-focused therapy depending on your needs. I also work with clients navigating cultural identity, family expectations, and intergenerational family dynamics. Therapy with me is a space where we can explore how your experiences, relationships, culture, and past have shaped you without losing sight of who you want to become.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, grounded, honest, and collaborative. I’m not here to judge you or tell you how you should live your life. I’m here to help you understand yourself better, recognize the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and figure out what change can realistically look like for you. I’m an active therapist, so our sessions are more than just talking about what happened during your week. I’ll ask questions, help you make connections, offer different perspectives, and teach practical coping skills when they’re helpful. At the same time, we can go deeper. We may explore past experiences, trauma, relationships, attachment patterns, family dynamics, cultural expectations, or beliefs about yourself that continue to show up in your life today. I especially enjoy working with clients who want both insight and practical tools. You don’t have to choose between understanding why you feel the way you do and learning what to do about it. We can work on both.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first few sessions are about getting to know you and understanding what brought you to therapy. We’ll talk about what’s happening in your life now, what feels difficult, patterns you’ve noticed, important relationships and experiences, and what you would like to change. From there, we’ll identify goals together and create an approach that fits your needs. If anxiety or overwhelming emotions are making everyday life difficult, we may start with practical coping skills, grounding, mindfulness, emotional regulation, or stress management. When you’re ready, we can also explore deeper patterns connected to trauma, relationships, attachment, family dynamics, self-esteem, and past experiences. Depending on what you need, I may incorporate CBT, DBT-informed skills, somatic techniques, mindfulness, attachment-based therapy, psychodynamic exploration, IFS/parts work, or solution-focused therapy. There’s no one formula for therapy. Some sessions may be practical and focused on what’s happening right now, while others may involve deeper emotional processing and self-reflection. We’ll regularly check in on what’s helping and adjust our work as your needs change.
