Sam Colby, LCSW

Psychotherapist
CA
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master's in Social Work from Portland State University and a Bachelor's from Lewis & Clark College. I am passionate about helping people through life's challenges and transitions. A natural listener with broad training and experience, I am gentle, perceptive, intelligent, funny, empathetic, and supportive. I use these strengths to uplift others and support them in becoming their best selves through our work together. My approach I use an eclectic approach to therapy, grounded in strengths-based and Rogerian philosophy, drawing predominantly from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. I am also trained in Brainspotting. I invite clients to imagine their lives without their current problems and help them problem-solve by building on their strengths and developing skills to reduce barriers to that life. With a strong social justice orientation, I consider the effects of societal systems and individual identities on our work. My focus As a trans and LGBTQ person, I am passionate about working within the LGBTQIA+ community. I am comfortable supporting people from any community experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, navigating life transitions, or seeking support to live their best lives. My communication style I create a warm, friendly environment, always meeting clients where they are. I strive to provide a safe container where you feel supported in expressing and processing any aspect of your reality. I attune strongly with people and have been told all my life that I have a calming influence. My journey to mental healthcare My name means ?listener,? and I believe I was aptly named. I have always had an uncanny ability to listen fully and empathize with anyone. I naturally see others' perspectives, ask questions that deepen understanding, and notice connections that foster growth.
