“It would be a lie to say I had never set foot in a therapeutic setting before my first session with Sean. As a guy in my 20s, I'd never dipped my toes in the water of mental health ... or gotten within 100 yards of the pool. I don't say lightly that the 2-year journey with Sean changed the course of my life. I became a more caring, empathetic and thoughtful person. I got to know myself for who I truly am. I became a better partner, friend, son and brother. My relationships improved. My happiness improved. My *life* improved. I did those things in no small part thanks to Sean, who is a brilliant, thoughtful, well-read, and incredibly perceptive clinician. His innate ability to facilitate a relationship of trust immediately jumped off the screen, and his deftness in navigating difficult conversations remains mind-boggling. It can be hard for men to seek help. It shouldn't be. Especially not as long as there are people like Sean there to listen. I recommend him in the highest terms.”

Getting to know Sean O'Hara

Hi, My name is Sean O'Hara. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York and Maine with over 7 years of experience working in the Mental Health field. I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, mood disorders, grief and loss, life transitions, and family/relationship issues. I graduated from Fordham University with an MSW, and have worked in a variety of clinical settings including inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities. I am an inclusive therapist and ally to the LGBTQIA+ community. I am a solution-focused therapist with a person-centered approach. While I have specialty training in CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), CT-R (Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, and Motivational Interviewing, my approach is always tailored to your needs in a way we both see fit to meet your goals. I believe in the resiliency of the human spirit and identifying those things which motivate you as an individual in a judgement-free space. My purpose for you is to create a therapeutic atmosphere that will meet you where you are at while exploring where you want to be. I am committed to supporting and empowering you toward the life you are meant to lead.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic philosophy is that we all possess resilience within ourselves, and I am here to help you to identify that resilience and help yourself to grow. I take an action-oriented approach to therapy, as most who come to speak with me in therapy want to get right into the work, and I am here to meet that need.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

For those unfamiliar with therapy or the therapeutic process, the first session, commonly referred to as the intake session, involves the initial identification of what brings you to therapy as well as a biopsychosocial assessment and diagnosis. This session is usually an hour. Follow up sessions are typically weekly (though I am open to every other week sessions), and this will be when the majority of our work together occurs. We will dive deeper into the identified issues, and in time develop a therapeutic relationship of trust and understanding. It is my belief that the most productive work only occurs when trust can be effectively established.
