Getting to know Semah Shammas

I'm a licensed clinical social worker with a Master's in Social Work from Aurora University, and I'm certified as a psychologically sensitive, trauma-informed yoga teacher through Chicago Room to Breathe. Additionally, I am currently completing the somatic attachment therapy certification program through TheEmbodyLab.com. I specialize in anxiety, depression, self-esteem, life transitions, relationship difficulties, and trauma recovery. As an attuned therapist, my intention is to meet clients where they are. With 13 years of social work experience across all ages, I love building relationships with clients and working alongside them to explore their inner world and incorporate new strategies for a more fulfilling life. I use a trauma-informed approach, aiming to create a therapeutic relationship grounded in safety and sovereignty, so you can explore, acknowledge, and express your thoughts and feelings when you're ready. I strive to provide culturally responsive care, recognizing that race, ethnicity, religion, and physical challenges all uniquely and powerfully impact human experience. Having worked in social services for several years, I am also aware of the systemic trauma and oppression many marginalized groups face, and I practice clinically from this perspective. My priority is to offer clients a supportive, empathetic environment that facilitates growth and insight. I recognize the courage it takes to reach out for support, and I feel deeply honored to work with others in becoming their most authentic, whole selves.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I will provide guided counseling, a listening ear, education and resources that align with your unique needs. With my clients, I work with them to learn and incorporate tools for regulating their nervous system, coping with life stressors, and gaining awareness to how their past impacts their present. We work together to visualize how they want to feel and be in the world, and explore what changes can be applied to their lives.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first few sessions will involve an evaluation to gain a better understanding of your concerns, needs, and goals. By the end of the evaluation, I will offer you some initial impressions of what our work might include or I may recommend an alternative provider who may be better compatible for your needs. The following sessions will first focus on your immediate needs at the time of the appointment. At the start of the sessions, we will discuss anything that is on your mind, then concentrate on the goals from the initial evaluation. You can expect to build a therapeutic alliance in which you can explore your inner world in a compassionate, non-judgmental space. During our sessions, you may gain insight into different perspectives, explore your "blind spots," and build coping skills to manage distressing feelings and stressors.
