“Dr. Shannon has been a great therapist for me. From the beginning, I asked to be challenged — something that was hard for me in the past — but since working with her, I’ve grown more confident and learned that it’s okay to set boundaries. She has a calm presence, really listens to what I’m saying, and keeps each session engaging and meaningful. I always leave my sessions with her feeling much better than when I went in. I highly recommend her.”

Great to meet you! I am Dr. Shannon Howard, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LCPC, LPC) for the states of DC & MD, a Certified Life Coach, and an Author. I have been helping individuals, children, couples, and families navigate grief and loss, trauma, anxiety, adjustment, depression and more for over 24 years. My educational background consists of a dual Master's in both Counseling and Clinical Psychology. I received my first master's at Towson University in 2000, a second Masters and Doctorate in 2008 and 2010 from The American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University. I minored in Philosophy as well as Women's Studies. I possess specialized training in areas of trauma, specifically in the assessment and treatment of sex offenders and survivors of sexual assault. I have worked in an adult inpatient psychiatric hospital, a day program for adults with chronic and acute mental illness, as well as on an outpatient basis as a private practitioner and with a group practice. I worked with Parole and Probation to help clients maintain compliance and management while on the registry. As a Certified Life Coach, I help coaching clients discover what they truly desire. We collaborate to create a roadmap to move you forward and build a future that feels grounded and authentic to you. At present, I offer a full range of services and am open to accepting new virtual clients. I am LGBTQIA+allied, sex-positive, kink-friendly and nurturing to clients within this community. I also help clients navigate open relationships (ENM), polyamory, and non-traditional relationships. **I CAN ONLY SEE CLIENTS WHO ARE IN THE STATES OF DC AND MD AT THE TIME OF THEIR SCHEDULED SESSION.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get." Such a true statement! Many of us have to "work with the cards we're dealt," even when those cards leave us feeling as if we have very few choices, and as if we have no control of our lives, but, isn't,"Life what you make it"? With that said, are you happy with life? Are you struggling with the chocolates in your box, or cards dealt you? We welcome the opportunity to offer new perspectives, that could result in a more fulfilled life! Generally speaking, "therapy is designed to help increase your personal insight, promote healthy behaviors, and improve upon or teach new methods for coping. Armed with these new skills, you can begin to make changes in your life."

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.

Working with Dr Shannon has been great for me. We laugh, I cry, but I always leave the session feeling better than when I walked in. She challenges me, and helps me to shift my perspective when applicable. I definitely have seen growth and positive change since working with Dr. Shannon, so I’m very thankful!
She's very easy to speak with, she gives great advice and assignments. So happy o chose her!!! Finally starting to put some things into perspective.
I would add... Authentic, Holistic, and kind.
After a technical issue with the televisit, this provider charged me as a no show against the platform policy. Then when customer service requested the refund, she referred me to another provider for anger management as a retaliative measure when I was seeking care for smthg else. Highly unprofessional. Do not recommend.
