“I have been meeting with Shannon for almost two years and I cannot express how much she has helped me. I was struggling with patterns of disordered eating and mental distress and Shannon guided me through actionable steps to take to bring me back to a state of health and wellness. She often seems to read my mind when I am unable to articulate my thoughts and feelings and it is so comforting to have a trusted outlet who intends to understand rather than judge or sympathize. Shannon has given me insight and skills to live a more peaceful existence and I am very thankful to have found her practice. ”

Getting to know Dr. Shannon Walker

NOTE: We are not in network with MediCal or any private insurance. We provide a super bill for you to submit for reimbursement. Welcome to our therapeutic practice, where we embark on journeys of transformation, personal growth, and resilience. In this space we bring sturdy compassion and unwavering dedication to helping you make real and lasting changes. We're not here to sugarcoat things or tiptoe around issues because we understand that life is an adventure, and together, we're here to conquer it. OUR TEAM: Dr. Vanessa Hughes: I'm a certified trauma expert with two decades of experience in various trauma-related roles. I've delved deep into somatically-oriented therapies and nerded out on neurophysiology. Why? Because I believe we're not just passengers in our bodies; we ARE our bodies. And guess what? Our bodies hold some incredible stories. My academic journey has been quite the ride too. I hold a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and several Master's degrees: Psychology (for those one-on-one deep dives), Marriage and Family Therapy (for all those juicy relationship dynamics), Intercultural Studies (because culture matters), and Theology (for that transcendent perspective). To me, this isn't just a job; it's a calling. It's about finding meaning, purpose, and genuine connection in this wild journey we call life. Let's make your life the masterpiece it deserves to be! Hi! I am Rachel I have genuine, strengths-based approach to interacting with others. With a background in working in a medical setting and an interest in health and fitness, I believe in healing human beings, not just human bodies. I believe slowing down to focus on the mind-body connection is an important aspect of well-rounded, holistic health. This has been central in my work with individuals with traumatic brain injuries and medical conditions as well as at-risk children, adolescents, and families. My background has strengthened my ability to believe in people for who they truly are.

What should a new client know about working with you?

NOTE: We are not in network with MediCal or private insurance. We provide a super bill for you to submit for reimbursement. Life, in our view, is an adventure, and we're here to help you conquer it. We see each session as a step forward in this incredible journey. Together, we'll navigate through the challenges, confront the obstacles, and embrace the opportunities that life throws our way. We don't see people as a collection of problems. In fact, we see most problems as relics of traumas from our pasts. We believe that understanding and healing these underlying traumas is the key to real, lasting change. It's not about just putting a band-aid on the surface; it's about getting to the root of the issue and addressing it head-on. We're not therapists who are all about identifying and avoiding triggers. We don't build a life around the ghosts of our past. Instead, we confront those ghosts, understand them, and then set them free. The goal is to live a life where you're not constantly looking over your shoulder, but rather, confidently moving forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Here's a glimpse of what you can expect when working with us: First step - Initial Assessment: Our journey starts with a conversation. We want to hear your story, and this initial assessment is all about you. It's a chance for you to share as much or as little as you're comfortable with. Your pace matters. What we will do: Body Awareness: Somatic therapy is about connecting with your body. We'll be your guides in becoming more aware of your physical sensations and how they're linked to your emotions and memories. We might explore this through mindfulness exercises, gentle movements, or relaxation techniques. Expression and Exploration: Your emotions and thoughts matter. We'll encourage you to express yourself in ways that feel right for you—whether it's through talking, art, writing, or any other form of self-expression. Our space is judgment-free for you to explore your feelings. Coping Strategies: Life can be challenging, and we'll work together to equip you with practical coping strategies and self-care techniques tailored to your unique needs. These tools are designed to help you manage your symptoms and find relief from distress. Trauma Processing: As our sessions progress, we'll embark on a journey to process and release any trauma that might be causing emotional and physical pain. This may involve revisiting past experiences, understanding their impact, and gradually working through associated emotions. Empowerment: Our ultimate goal is to empower you. We want to help you discover a deeper understanding of yourself and your resilience. Together, we'll uncover your inner strengths and provide you with valuable tools to navigate life more effectively. In a nutshell, our approach as holistic somatic trauma-informed therapists revolves around creating a safe, understanding space, promoting body awareness, and guiding you on your unique path toward healing and self-discovery. Your journey is important, and we're here to support you every step of the way.
