“I’ve had 2 appointments with Dr Walker, and I appreciate her help. She is direct and clearly communicates. I’ve seen a few therapists and she doesn’t just blame my serotonin level and chat about my difficulty. I’m learning about how to address my thoughts and feelings.I feel empowered learning about the cognitive therapy approach, and I look forward to learning more skills to take action against my depression and anxiety.”

Getting to know Dr. Sharon G. Walker

Hi. My name is Dr. Sharon Walker. I am a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience in the field. I think of counseling as a team effort that requires a trusting relationship between the client and the therapist. The focus of therapy is on the client and the issues they are confronting. I have helped clients with many different issues through the years and consider myself a generalist with no particular specialty areas. My approach My basic therapeutic approach is client-centered, which places an emphasis on the client's needs and goals. I do not judge people since I believe that everyone is doing the best they can at any moment in time. If something is not working in their life, we can explore ways for them to make changes in the problem areas. My focus In my career, I have worked with a variety of clients. The majority of those clients were struggling with depression and/or anxiety. However, I have worked with people who wanted to change some troubling behavior, break an addiction, work on relationship issues, change negative feelings about themselves, and many other areas of concern. I will not work with problems that lie outside my expertise and will willingly refer the client to other practitioners. My communication style I am basically an informal person and clients have told me that “I am easy to talk to.” I think of myself as a warm person and a good listener. My journey to mental healthcare My first career was teaching middle school math, which I loved. While teaching, I recognized that students needed help with other issues besides learning a subject. I wanted to be part of that helping team. I got my Master's degree and was licensed as a school counselor. During training for that endeavor, I realized that, at the time, counselors were doing more administrative tasks than counseling and that this might not be the way for me to go. After teaching for eight years, I went to Texas A&M to obtain my PhD in counseling psychology.
