Getting to know Sharon Stines

I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy to help people overcome the negative effects of all types of trauma, including emotional, physical, sexual, and narcissistic abuse, domestic violence, and psychological manipulation. Understanding trauma is essential: it is pervasive and does not discriminate. Terrible events or repeated daily stresses can affect anyone, making life more difficult. Importantly, trauma is not defined by the event itself but by the individual’s experience of it. EMDR therapy is a structured approach that helps people heal from trauma or other distressing life experiences. It consists of eight phases: (1) History and Treatment Planning; (2) Preparation; (3) Assessment; (4) Desensitization; (5) Installation; (6) Body Scan; (7) Closure; and (8) Reevaluation. During therapy, attention is given to a negative image, belief, and body sensation related to specific traumatic events. While the client focuses on the upsetting memory, the therapist guides sets of side-to-side eye movements, sounds, or taps. After each set, the client notices what comes to mind. These sets are repeated until the event becomes less disturbing. EMDR helps the brain process traumatic memories by disconnecting the brain’s “fight, flight, and freeze” response from the original event(s). The bilateral stimulation involved helps resolve negative memories and “rewires” the brain, installing more positive, resilient imagery. I earned my PsyD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern California, which informs my compassionate and evidence-based approach to trauma therapy.
