“They listen well and I feel super comfortable telling them everything on my mind without any concern about judgment. As a queer person, this is the most important aspect of seeking therapy. I have had some bad experiences with prior therapists due to my gender identity and sexual orientation. Shauna is very experienced working with people like me and it shows in our sessions. They are so casual and relaxed and it feels like I’m venting to a friend.”

Getting to know Shauna Chisholm

My name is Shauna Chisholm, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Registered Art Therapist. I believe we all come to this field for a reason, and my lived experiences have helped me better understand the experiences of my clients. My approach As a Registered Art Therapist, I enjoy combining art therapy with other modalities tailored to each client's unique goals. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all model and work collaboratively with each individual. Often, I draw from Solution-Focused or Recovery Model approaches. For the past 12 years, I have worked with individuals facing co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns, as well as in crisis settings. My focus I particularly enjoy working with individuals in the LGBTQ+ community, those who are neurodivergent, and those experiencing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or with a history of substance use. My communication style I believe everyone has the ability to grow and change, and I enjoy being part of that process. I like to incorporate my interests alongside those of my clients because counseling can have an element of fun, and using our unique interests during sessions can help us connect with ourselves. Each session is client-guided as we work toward the goals they set. My journey to mental healthcare I have my own lived experience with mental health concerns, which has inspired me to help others achieve their goals and live their best lives. I earned my Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Davis, and my MA in Marriage and Family Therapy and Art Therapy from Phillips Graduate Institute. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Expressive Therapies, focusing on working with LGBTQ+ women with a history of substance use through expressive therapies. My goals for you You are the expert in your life, and I work with you to identify and achieve the goals you want to pursue.
