Shawn Davis-Edwards, MS

Psychotherapist
418 77th St, Brooklyn, NY
I’m a Mental Health Counselor with a Limited Permit (MHC-LP) who works with adults living with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder (I & II), major depression, anxiety, and other serious mental health concerns. I also have experience supporting children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Living with a mental health diagnosis can affect so much more than your symptoms. It can impact your relationships, confidence, independence, work, daily routines, and the way you see yourself. I believe therapy should be a place where you can talk openly about those experiences without feeling judged or defined by a diagnosis. My approach is supportive, collaborative, and individualized. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, and person-centered therapy to help clients better understand their thoughts and emotions, manage symptoms, develop coping skills, and work toward meaningful goals. Whether you’re adjusting to a diagnosis, struggling with mood changes, experiencing anxiety or depression, or simply looking for additional support, my goal is to help you feel heard, understood, and empowered as we work toward meaningful change together.

Getting to know Shawn Davis-Edwards

Whether you’re adjusting to a diagnosis, struggling with mood changes, experiencing anxiety or depression, or simply looking for additional support, my goal is to help you feel heard, understood, and empowered as we work toward meaningful change together.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You are more than your diagnosis. One of the most important things I want clients to know is that therapy with me is a space where you can be yourself without feeling judged, labeled, or reduced to your symptoms. My style is supportive, patient, collaborative, and practical. I want to understand what life has been like for you, what you’re struggling with, and what you want to be different. We’ll work together rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. I work with adults managing schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, emotional regulation difficulties, and major life stressors. Depending on your needs, our work may focus on coping skills, understanding triggers and symptoms, managing emotions, improving daily functioning, strengthening relationships, building confidence, and working toward personal goals. My goal is for you to leave therapy with greater insight into yourself and practical tools you can use in your everyday life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first few sessions are focused on getting to know you as a person, not just understanding your diagnosis. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, current symptoms or stressors, important relationships and experiences, what has or hasn’t helped in the past, and what you would like to work toward. From there, we’ll develop treatment goals together based on your individual needs. Sessions may focus on managing anxiety or depression, coping with mood changes, understanding triggers, improving emotional regulation, strengthening coping skills, navigating relationships, increasing motivation, or managing the everyday challenges that can come with serious mental health conditions. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, and person-centered therapy. This allows us to combine practical coping strategies with a supportive space to process what you’re experiencing. We’ll continue checking in on your progress and adjust our approach as your needs and goals change. Therapy is collaborative, and you will always have a voice in the direction of our work.
