Getting to know Shelagh Murphy
I have been a licensed social worker for 10 years. I am currently running an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). I have worked extensively in the medical field, including ICUs, oncology, and hospice. I am trauma-informed and utilize a strength-based framework, drawing from theories and tools such as CBT, DBT, positive therapy, person-centered therapy, motivational interviewing, and humanistic therapy. I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community and sex positive.
I graduated with my master's in social work from Columbia University and, until recently, worked at major city hospitals in Boston and New York City. I am currently living and working in rural North Carolina. I served in the Peace Corps in St. Kitts and Nevis and have a bachelor's degree in fine art photography. I cut my teeth working with people in some of their most vulnerable moments and have found our core of resilience is a strong center to build on.
I have experience working with folks ranging from older teenagers through centenarians, grappling with everything from adjusting to a new job to coping with terminal cancer. Life is hard, and my goal with therapy is to make it more endurable, manageable, and hopefully *gasp* enjoyable. I look forward to working with you!

I've tried therapy several times but never found it to be productive or helpful. Shelagh met and exceeded my initial expectations of what therapy could be like. She has been so helpful and insightful. She is easy to talk to and quite knowledgeable. I can actually recognize signs of growth and improvement that I've never experienced with other therapists. I can't rave enough about how pleased I am to have stumbled across her and how helpful and supportive she has been!
