Getting to know Sherlan Mcknight

I approach psychotherapy from a transformative stance that empowers clients to explore their inner selves in a nonjudgmental and safe environment. The collaborative process involves working together to navigate life challenges and foster personal growth uniquely tailored to your needs. My approach includes understanding how past experiences, traumas, relationships, and emotions shape who you are today. I use a systematic lens to better understand you and your life. I also incorporate empowerment and spirituality (if needed) to help you (re)connect with your authentic self and rediscover your capacity for self-actualization. My practice is culturally centered, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive, utilizing clinical approaches so that we as a community can reclaim and experience transformative healing. As an Afro-Caribbean immigrant, I am dedicated to creating a culturally relevant space for BIPOC individuals where you feel safe, heard, understood, and empowered. I hold a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy from Alliance University and a Master's in Christian Ministry from the New School of Biblical Theology. I've seen Sherlan twice now and I have another session scheduled. She is a great listener! I tend to want to spill everything out and she patiently waits until I get it all out. Then her insight, positivity, and empathy she shows makes me feel heard and that my feelings are valid. She has a great sense of humor so we get along well. She's punctual and professional. I can tell she's solely focused on what I'm saying and she's able to summarize my underlying feelings perfectly. She's easy to talk to and for anyone who's anxious about therapy she has a great personality that will make you feel comfortable. Highly recommend!

Last week was my first meeting with Ms McKight and I was feeling very anxious and nervous. I wasn’t certain what to expect or how to open up and express how I was feeling inside. I know Ms. McKight could sense how I was feeling because she helped me relax by opening up the session. Ms. McKight began by introducing herself, her years of experience, a synoptic overview of her therapeutic style with individual goals and an anticipated final outcome. Then she asked me to talk about myself and my expected outcome. Ms McKnight had answered many of my questions that I had written down prior to our session (in her introduction)—— so I was able to open up with less anxiety to talk about myself. What helped even more was Ms. McKnight’s ability to listen to me and ask questions that provoked me to think and express what was really going on in my life at the present time. Can’t wait for our next sessions to find the free true peaceful “ME”!
