Stanley Sorensen, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Stanley! I was first licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1993 after earning my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Phillips Graduate University. Over the years, I have explored many approaches to therapy. While I once identified primarily as a cognitive therapist, I now clearly follow an integrative approach to working with people in therapy sessions. My approach I almost always begin with a solution-focused approach because it is client-centered and allows me to understand right away what you are seeking in therapy. Since every person is unique, I have a lot of flexibility in using strategies that work best for you as an individual. My focus I prefer working with people who are open to experimenting with different approaches, especially those who want to learn how to prescribe their own treatment. In other words, using your own intuition, you can tell me what you want and are willing to do to reach your goals, and I will respond with prompts and tasks that help get you there quickly. My communication style I start gently but soon begin cutting to the chase, peeling back the layers of unconscious defenses you have developed. Through humor, appropriate self-disclosure, stories, and questions, I walk with you through your own self-exploration, learning, unlearning, and self-actualization. Having had a previous career as a teacher and having taught psychology and therapy at a post-graduate university for many years, I sometimes incorporate teaching as part of the therapy process. My goals for you Goal-setting is of primary importance in therapy. Clarifying your goals is the first significant step we take. Having clearly defined goals helps us stay on track and reach your solutions quickly. Sometimes the process brings up unexpected goals that become important in shaping the therapy tasks that follow.
