Stephen Barnard, LCSW

Stephen Barnard, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NC
I have worked in the mental health field since volunteering on a crisis hotline in NYC after 9/11. I received my Master's in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY) in 2006 and soon after relocated to Asheville, North Carolina. Once here, I worked as a therapist in several community-based organizations before joining a progressive residential facility (CooperRiis), where I went on to serve as Clinical Director. For the last four years, I have worked in private practice. Any therapeutic relationship must be based on respect, compassion, and genuine interest, which serves as the foundation for my work with every person. Everyone faces unique challenges, so I tailor my approach individually. One of my abiding interests has been how to best initiate and sustain positive personal growth from within, grounded in both psychological and neuroscientific understandings. When I worked at CooperRiis, I recruited a Harvard neuroscientist to join our team, enabling us to offer some of the most cutting-edge, brain-based approaches available anywhere. I have extensive mindfulness and meditation experience, which has been a personal and professional interest for decades. Blending an up-to-date understanding of the brain with therapy methods and mindfulness techniques is my focus, and I have had the privilege to witness many people experience positive and sustainable changes through this approach-transforming the experience of living on a day-to-day basis.
