Psychotherapist
VA
I'm Stephen, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist providing remote psychoanalytic therapy throughout California. I work primarily with creatives, tech professionals, and people navigating significant life transitions—those moments when the old ways of being stop working and you need to figure out what comes next. My clinical training includes an MA in Clinical Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies and advanced training at psychoanalytic institutes across California, New York, and Europe. In 2022, I received a Scholar Award from Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association. Before becoming a therapist, I spent years in contemplative practice—including extended monastery retreats in India, Myanmar, and Thailand—and teaching meditation internationally. I also worked in experimental art scenes in New York, Paris, and Berlin. This background informs how I listen: with patience for what can't be rushed and curiosity about what needs to emerge. I serve as a clinical mentor for the American Psychological Association (Division 39), the Massachusetts Association for Psychoanalytic Psychology, and the San Francisco chapter of CAMFT. I'm also Founder and Director of the Association for the Clinic of the Future, exploring how contemporary issues—including AI's impact on subjectivity and ecological crisis—shape psychological life. My practice focuses on people who think deeply, feel intensely, and find themselves stuck despite doing everything "right." If you're ready to understand what's really going on beneath the surface, I'm here.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me means showing up as you are—no performance required. It's about creating authentic space for whatever needs to be said, even (especially) the things that feel impossible to put into words. I work psychoanalytically, which means we pay attention to what you're reporting about your life, the details of how you say it and what's actually happening between us as we work. Dreams, slips of the tongue, the jokes you make, what you can't quite remember—all of it matters. We're looking for patterns, for what repeats, for what your symptoms might be trying to tell you. Sessions are weekly (or more) because consistency matters. This work requires building trust over time. You'll probably find yourself talking about things you didn't plan to. That's the point. That’s a big part of how change starts to happen. I work primarily via telehealth throughout California, so we can meet wherever you are, as long as you have real privacy and focus. Some people walk while we talk. Some sit in their parked car. Some stare at the ceiling from their couch. If you're looking for someone to tell you what to do next, I'm not your guy. But if you want someone who will actually listen, won't flinch at the depths of your pain, and who believes you're capable of figuring out what you need—then let's talk.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We start with a consultation—usually one or two sessions where we talk about what brought you here, what you're hoping for, and whether this feels like the right fit. I'll ask questions. You'll get a sense of how I work. If it feels right to both of us, we move forward. From there, we meet weekly at the same time each week. That consistency isn't arbitrary—it creates a container so deep work can happen. You talk about whatever's on your mind. Sometimes that's the crisis that brought you in. Sometimes it's a dream you had, a conversation that's bothering you, a detail you can't stop thinking about. I listen closely—not just to what you're saying but to how you're saying it, what you're avoiding, what keeps coming up. I'll ask questions. I'll point things out. Sometimes I'll sit with silence because that's where something important is trying to emerge. This isn't a quick fix. Psychoanalytic therapy takes time because we're not just addressing symptoms—we're trying to understand what they mean, what function they serve, what you're really asking for when you say you want to feel better. Often change happens slowly, and then suddenly. You'll notice you're reacting differently to things. Old patterns unravelling. The goal is to help you become more yourself—to want what you actually want, to live with less fear of your inner life, to stop repeating the same painful patterns without understanding why.
