Getting to know Steven Kapela
I am Steve Kapela, and I've been in long-term recovery since May 12, 2008. Gambling, alcohol, and drugs, etc. are all part of that story. My recovery has allowed me to heal my family, build a career, find redemption, and repair the damage from 35 years of addiction. I have even earned a full pardon from the governor of Ohio for my past. At the age of 50, I began working in the recovery field while pursuing my education. In 2016, I earned my Master of Social Work (LISW-S), and by 2017, I received my independent social worker license and Chemical Dependency certification. I was also among the first in Ohio to be certified as a gambling counselor (LICDC-CS-GAMB). As a Community Mental Health program supervisor, I helped develop Ohio’s largest and most extensive Gambling Treatment program. Having experienced addiction and recovery myself, I believe that individuals of all ages and backgrounds have the potential for change when provided with the right support. With 35 years of lived experience, along with my professional training, I possess a deep understanding and empathy for my clients. Recovery is possible, it may be the hardest thing you ever do, but it comes with rewards you cannot imagine today. I will never give up on you because I know recovery is possible for everyone. I am a Masters level Licensed Clinical Social worker in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Virginia.
