Hi there, I'm Susan! I am Susan Ristau, a Georgia-licensed professional counselor with many years of education and experience. I earned my Master’s in Educational Psychology and Counseling from the University of West Georgia and my Bachelor’s degree from Kennesaw State University. I believe my clients have the innate ability to solve their own problems and sometimes just need a gentle push from a compassionate listener to improve their lives. My approach I use a humanistic, client-centered approach to counseling. Sometimes I incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy techniques and other modalities to assist in sessions. There is no ONE SIZE FITS ALL, as clients are unique, so I tailor my approach to what feels comfortable and works for us both. My focus I enjoy working with women’s issues, relationship communication and conflict, LGBTQIA+ and gender ambiguity, family of origin difficulties, and managing stress, anxiety, and depression. I prefer working with adults, ages 18 to 80. My communication style I believe in honest, open communication with clients, letting them set the pace for disclosure. No one wants to be told what to do or feel like their counselor is acting parental. Clients need encouragement and support to solve their own struggles and possess the ability to do so with a little assistance from an experienced, compassionate helper. I truly enjoy empowering my clients during our time together. My journey to mental healthcare I have always been a good listener and care deeply about others. From an early age, I enjoyed getting to know people and helping them feel good about themselves. My sense of humor has always made people feel at ease, and my open, honest energy has a calming effect. Even in the grocery store checkout line, people often share personal information with me. At different times, I have sought counseling and found it beneficial. I decided early on that I wanted to be an encourager and supporter.
