Getting to know Susette Abbas

I have been a therapist for the past 12 years and have worked with adolescents and adults, as well as children and families from diverse backgrounds. My focus has been primarily on depression, anxiety, trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, life transitions, and pregnancy/postpartum concerns. I hold a Master’s in School Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential from Loyola Marymount University. My approach to therapy integrates the psychodynamic approach with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, along with mind/body and mindfulness techniques. This means we collaboratively explore thoughts, beliefs, and personal narratives, adjusting those that are false or faulty. The psychodynamic approach helps identify early experiences and messages often at the root of distorted or unhealthy beliefs. Incorporating mind/body and mindfulness techniques fosters awareness of physical responses to psychological distress, which is especially helpful for clients struggling with anxiety or trauma. I often use art in my own life to access feelings and thoughts that are not easily expressed verbally, and I offer these techniques to clients who are interested. The trust and warmth that characterize a good therapeutic relationship create an environment where self-reflection and inquiry can take place, followed by a willingness to step just outside our comfort zones—even in the tiniest ways—and face our obstacles and challenges, “slaying the dragon,” as it were. The journey toward transformation, healing, and a more fulfilling life is not necessarily easy, nor does it have a straight path or clear end. It is a deeply rewarding process of continual change and growth, and I feel privileged to be part of that journey alongside my clients—providing a space for honest introspection, reflection, and change.
