Dr. Timothy Michaels, PhD

Psychotherapist
NY
I know starting with a new therapist can feel hard, and building trust takes time. I’m patient, warm, and intentional about creating a comfortable space where you can feel supported as you grow and build resilience. I work with children, teens, and adults facing anxiety, depression, trauma, LGBTQIA+ and transgender-related concerns, grief, relationship challenges, and life adjustments. Some people come to me in the middle of a crisis. Others come because something has felt off for a long time and they’re finally ready to look at it. Both are good reasons to start.

Getting to know Dr. Timothy Michaels

What should a new client know about working with you?

Many of my clients are looking for practical, evidence-based support for what they’re dealing with right now. For anxiety, depression, and stress I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). For trauma I draw on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure, and Trauma- Focused CBT. I also have specialized training in working with LGBTQIA+ clients, including transgender-affirming care. I’m direct, empathic, and transparent about how I can help.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Taking that first step into therapy can be difficult, but it can also be deeply rewarding. In a first session I’ll ask what brought you in now, what you’ve already tried, and what you’d want to be different — and we’ll start shaping goals from there. In our work together, I’ll listen, validate your experience, gently challenge you when needed, and give you concrete skills to use between sessions. I look forward to hearing how I can help.
