Getting to know Yihan Yuan

Hi, I'm Yihan! I'm a Mandarin-speaking therapist offering online therapy throughout New York, with sessions also available in English. I work with young adults, college students, international students, immigrants, and young professionals experiencing anxiety, depression, overthinking, stress, burnout, perfectionism, low self-esteem, relationship issues, family conflict, cultural adjustment, and major life transitions. Do you find yourself constantly worrying, feeling overwhelmed by academic or career pressure, or struggling with the feeling that you're never doing enough? Maybe you have difficulty setting boundaries, experience self-doubt, or feel torn between family expectations and your own needs. You might appear to have everything together while privately feeling anxious, disconnected, or uncertain about your future. I offer a warm, collaborative, and culturally responsive approach to therapy. Together, we'll explore what's contributing to your challenges, develop healthier coping skills, strengthen your confidence, and help you navigate relationships, identity, and life changes with greater clarity.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, attachment-based approaches, mindfulness, and culturally responsive care. I believe meaningful change comes from both understanding the patterns behind your struggles and developing practical strategies to manage them. If you're struggling with anxiety, excessive worrying, or perfectionism, we'll explore the thoughts and beliefs that contribute to these patterns while building healthier ways to respond to stress. If you're experiencing depression, low self-esteem, people-pleasing, or difficulty setting boundaries, we'll work on strengthening self-awareness, emotional resilience, and confidence. I also help clients navigate relationship conflicts, communication difficulties, family expectations, identity exploration, and the challenges of adjusting to new cultural or social environments. I recognize how immigration experiences, cultural identity, and academic or professional pressures can influence mental health, relationships, and a sense of belonging. My goal is to provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can better understand yourself, develop healthier coping skills, and make choices that align with your needs and values.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you're unsure what to talk about or have never worked with a therapist before. You don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out. After you book through Zocdoc, I'll personally contact you to arrange an initial consultation and discuss the next steps. During our initial sessions, we'll explore your current concerns, personal experiences, relationships, and what you hope to gain from therapy. Whether you're seeking support for anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, or a major life transition, we'll establish goals that reflect your individual needs. As we continue working together, we'll identify recurring patterns, explore underlying emotions, develop practical coping strategies, and regularly revisit your progress. Depending on your needs, our work may focus on managing difficult thoughts, improving emotional regulation, strengthening communication, or developing healthier relationships. My approach is collaborative and individualized, allowing us to move at a pace that feels comfortable while working toward meaningful, sustainable change.

I feel better after the first session. Yihan is very kind and truly listens to me. I’m looking forward to our future sessions
As an international student, it was important for me to find a therapist who understands where I'm coming from. I'm really glad I found Yihan. She's very understanding, and I appreciate that she helps me explore family expectations and career stress. It's been really helpful.
She's a wonderful therapist who truly cares about her clients. She asks some good questions and helps you see things from different perspectives instead of simply telling you what you want to hear.
I've been seeing Yihan for a few sessions, and I genuinely feel that my mental health has been improving. As a former international student and now a young professional, I have faced struggles that can be difficult to explain or find the right audience for. I sometimes become stuck in obsessive thought patterns and hold certain values too rigidly, which can make me less happy. Because I had often felt judged in the past, I was nervous before my first session. However, Yihan quickly created a safe and nonjudgmental space and listened closely to my experiences. I tend to become philosophical when reflecting on my past, but Yihan is usually able to understand what I am trying to express. She also asks thoughtful questions that help me untangle my thoughts and find a way forward when I feel stuck. I really appreciate her empathy, openness, and insight, and I would highly recommend her.
Amazing provider! Really enjoyed working with Yihan, she's really genuine and patient. She's excellent at asking questions that help explore my emotions and where they came from. Definitely had a deeper understanding of myself and my experiences after talking with her!
Yihan is extremely patient. She listens and cares and is able to not only explain what is going on but also how I should deal with my issues. Thank you Yihan!
