“As a Japanese woman working in the U.S., I’ve often felt caught between very different expectations around work, communication, independence, and how much emotion you’re supposed to show. With Yuko, I don’t feel like I have to explain why certain things feel complicated. She understands the cultural context behind them, but she also helps me think about what I actually want for myself rather than simply following what is expected of me. Our sessions have helped me become more confident in setting boundaries, speaking up at work, and finding a way to live here without feeling like I have to choose between my Japanese identity and the life I’m building in the U.S. ”

Getting to know Yuko Kyutoku

I am a licensed Creative Arts Therapist and Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) providing compassionate, evidence-based therapy for adolescents and adults. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, stress, substance use and addiction, life transitions, relationship concerns, self-esteem, and emotional regulation. My approach is personalized, strengths-based, and focused on helping clients build healthy coping skills, resilience, and lasting emotional well-being. I believe therapy is most effective when clients feel safe, heard, and supported. I use evidence-based, client-centered interventions tailored to each individual's unique needs and goals. Whether you are seeking support for anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction recovery, or personal growth, I strive to create a welcoming, nonjudgmental space where meaningful change can happen. I provide therapy in both English and Japanese and welcome clients from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. I look forward to partnering with you on your journey toward improved mental health and overall well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, especially if it is your first time. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and judgment-free space where you can feel comfortable sharing your thoughts, emotions, and experiences at your own pace. I believe therapy is a collaborative process. Together, we will identify your goals, build on your strengths, and develop practical tools to help you navigate anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship challenges, self-esteem concerns, life transitions, and substance use recovery. I tailor each session to your unique needs using evidence-based approaches, including talk therapy, mindfulness, creative arts therapy, relaxation techniques, and other therapeutic interventions. Creative activities are always optional, and no artistic experience is required. My approach is compassionate, culturally responsive, and client-centered. Whether you are seeking support during a difficult time or working toward personal growth, I am committed to helping you build resilience, improve your mental well-being, and create meaningful, lasting change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During your first appointment, we will discuss what brings you to therapy, your personal history, current challenges, and what you hope to accomplish. This initial conversation helps me better understand your experiences so we can develop a treatment plan that reflects your goals and priorities. Future sessions are personalized to your progress and evolving needs. Depending on your goals, treatment may include cognitive and behavioral strategies, mindfulness, creative arts therapy, emotional regulation techniques, stress management, reflective exercises, or other evidence-based interventions. Throughout therapy, we will monitor your progress, address new challenges as they arise, and refine our approach to keep your treatment aligned with your goals. My focus is to help you gain insight, strengthen healthy coping strategies, improve emotional regulation, and apply what you learn in therapy to everyday life so you can continue making progress outside of our sessions.

Yuko is really experienced and very thorough with her approach. She's really patient and uses different ways to get you where you want to be. The coping skills that I have built over time have been invaluable; I will continue working with her. I highly recommend her.
Yuko has been incredibly supportive in helping me understand my relationship with alcohol and the emotions and patterns connected to it. I never feel judged or shamed in our sessions, which has made it much easier to be honest about things I usually have a hard time talking about. She helps me look beyond just the behavior itself and understand what I may be coping with underneath it. I really appreciate that she is compassionate while still helping me take accountability and think about healthier ways of managing stress and difficult emotions. I’ve felt more aware of my patterns and more confident in the changes I’m trying to make since working with her.
I’ve really appreciated working with Yuko. She makes it easy to talk honestly about things I’ve felt embarrassed or conflicted about, especially around substance use and the ways I cope when I’m stressed or overwhelmed. I never feel judged or lectured. She helps me slow things down, understand what is driving certain patterns, and think through changes in a way that actually feels realistic for me. I’ve become much more aware of myself through our sessions, and I feel like I’m making progress without feeling pressured to be perfect.
I highly recommend working with Yuko!
