Who are OB-GYNs, and what do they do?
Obstetrician-gynecologists (OB-GYNs) are healthcare professionals specializing in female reproductive health. They focus on both obstetrics and gynecology. The former involves working with pregnant women, while the latter involves treating various concerns affecting the female reproductive system.
OB-GYNs receive at least 12 years of training. They complete a pre-medical undergraduate program and spend four years in medical school. After graduating with an MD or a DO degree, they complete an internship and a residency in a hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology program. Typically, internships are one year long, and residencies span four years.
Some OB-GYNs undergo fellowship training after completing their residency to specialize in specific aspects of obstetrics and/or gynecology. Based on their subspecialty, the fellowship can last for 1-3 years. They can choose from areas like:
- Complex family planning
- Critical care medicine
- Female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery
- Gynecologic oncology
- Hospice and palliative medicine

Finally, they pass a two-part exam to earn board certification from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Additionally, they have to meet state licensure requirements, which usually require completing a certain number of continuing education credits each year.
Responsibilities of OB-GYNs include the following:
- Offer infertility treatments and counseling
- Pap smears to screen for cervical cancer
- Pelvic ultrasounds to examine the pelvic organs
- Fertility treatments like egg retrievals for IVF or egg-freezing
- Surgical procedures like cesarean sections and hysterectomies
- Management of urinary issues like urinary incontinence and urinary tract infections
- Breast health management through breast exams, including mammograms and other breast cancer screenings
What conditions do OB-GYNs treat?
OB-GYNs diagnose and treat various conditions, including the following:
- Ovarian cysts: Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs. They form in or on the surface of one or both of your ovaries, are common, and typically cause little or no discomfort. These cysts do not require treatment and go away within a few months.
However, ovarian cysts can sometimes rupture or become twisted, causing serious symptoms like pelvic pain, bloating, and pressure or heaviness in your abdomen. OB-GYNs treat them using medications like hormonal birth control and/or surgery.
- Endometriosis: Endometriosis, a common disorder, occurs when tissue resembling the inner lining of your uterus grows in other body parts, such as your fallopian tubes and ovaries. The main symptom of this illness is severe pelvic pain that might worsen over time. Other symptoms include pain during sex and excessive bleeding during or between periods.
- OB-GYNs initially prescribe medication - nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ibuprofen, hormonal birth control, etc. - to treat endometriosis. If medicines do not work, they might recommend surgery.
- Uterine fibroids: Uterine fibroids are growths of the uterus. They are non-cancerous, and most fibroids do not have symptoms. The ones that do can cause pelvic pain, painful periods, frequent urination, etc. The size, number, and location of the fibroids affect your symptoms.

Health insurance statistics for Texas
According to US Census data (2022), Texas ranks the highest among all states in terms of percentage of uninsured people. In fact, the census had to extend its range to compare Texas to other states on the chart.
However, there have been slight improvements in the number of uninsured Texans from 2021 to 2022. 17% of Texans (approximately 4.9 million) were uninsured in 2022, compared to 18% (approximately 5.2 million) in 2021.
