Ann Benner, LCSW

Psychotherapist
VA
Hi there, I'm Ann! I am Ann Bohr Benner, LCSW, with a Master’s in Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University. I work with adults of all ages dealing with depression, anxiety, life transitions, and grief. My approach We start with and return to client goals. I think holistically about people in distress. Sleep, diet, relaxation, exercise, social support, and spiritual life all contribute to change. Then self-awareness, insight, and intentional behavior change are important. I create a safe space where each person can be exactly where they are, allowing the natural inclination to heal and grow to flourish. My focus I work with people who have depression, anxiety, or are struggling with loss and change. I also work with those dealing with fallout from trauma. My communication style I create a supportive environment that allows people to safely experience difficult feelings and identify who they are and want to be. I can be gently accepting as well as clear about staying on task. My journey to therapy I first identified an interest in differences in people and culture when I chose anthropology as an undergraduate major. I went to social work school out of a desire for social progress. I've done community social work, organizing, medical social work, and worked at a family counseling agency. I worked in mental health to empower people to take charge of their own recoveries after facilitating my own recovery. I am deeply invested in my work as a therapist now, integrating this range of work and life experience. My goals for you Our work centers on client goals. We periodically re-evaluate goals, since these can change with time and experience. My first session with you In the first session, I will want to hear why you decided to pursue therapy and discuss what to expect from me. I will ask some questions about your history, as appropriate.
