Saying yes to therapy takes courage for many of us, and I believe that it is more challenging to live with the impacts of untreated mental health and trauma than it is to treat them. The hardest part is over, you showed up. Whether you are struggling to accept a harsh reality, working through temporary distress, loss, life transitions, or are ready to face a past that might feel like an obstacle to actualizing your preferred future, I can support you in navigating a path forward. Our work together will involve learning adaptive coping skills to help regulate tough emotions and tolerate distress that are transferable throughout the life course. Any skill, intervention, or treatment we discuss or use will be evidence-based, meaning long-term research has proven that they are effective. You are the driver, the expert in your life and of your unique experience. My approach is to meet you where you're at and to treat our therapeutic relationship as a partnership. Our work will be collaborative, trauma-informed, and solution-focused, with the hope that things can always feel or get better, even if it's just one day, one step at a time. You will have the opportunity to decide which treatment approaches we will use based on your specialized goals. Approaches that I use include CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), narrative therapy, written exposure therapy for the treatment of PTSD, DBT approaches (dialectical behavior therapy), mindfulness, and many more evidence-based approaches and treatment modalities.

What should a new client know about working with you?

If you have experienced sudden feelings of panic or anxiety without knowing why, had suicidal thoughts or depression, you are certainly not alone in this. Some of these experiences may also be due to having witnessed or experienced highly distressing events. According to the National Council for Behavioral Health (2022), 70% of adults in the U.S. have experienced some type of traumatic event at least once in their lives. The responses our bodies have to trauma are different for every person, but they help us to survive those events. Unhelpful thoughts, difficulty trusting or experiencing love, and/or intense body reactions after loss, trauma, or stressful events are common. These are also manageable and treatable with effective coping skills and support. Although I specialize in trauma and the treatment of PTSD, I support clients who experience many other life stressors and struggle to cope with them. I feel that it is a privilege to support clients in navigating life challenges with increased confidence, so they can enjoy an enhanced quality of life and take power over their lives and how they respond to inevitable difficulties. My goal is to create an inviting and non-judgmental space that will foster your sense of safety, as you define it. My intention in a partnership with you is that you feel heard and that your goals and expectations for therapy are met with validation and support. My hope is also that if, for some reason, you feel that a conversation or session did not align with those hopes or expectations, you will feel comfortable in sharing your experience with me, as this will strengthen our communication and our partnership.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I like to describe my journey to becoming a helper and therapist as being colorful and normalizing in terms of how inevitable life challenges and adversity can build resilience and hope. When we have hope, we can heal, and when we heal, we are more likely to experience joy and to live an "other-oriented" life. The benefits and positive impacts of healing and living, and engaging as self-actualized members of our communities, can enhance relationships, our quality of life, and the social health of our communities overall. Healing and recovery are a process; it takes time, but it is worth every step, worth every session. I am known to be a nerd for hope as it drives the work that I do, and enhances relationships and a sense of community. A favorite quote about hope regarding saying yes to therapy, advocating for change: "Hope isn't a complacent feeling that causes people to ignore their problems, hope is a key ingredient for our ability to yearn for a better future."-Martin Luther King, Jr. Research has shown that defining a goal by imagining your preferred future in detail is useful in the goal-setting process and is highly effective in goal achievement. We will discuss and recall your preferred future and modify, if and as needed, as you continue to work toward actualizing your best hopes and preferred future. We will also use scaling in most sessions, if not each session. We can rate levels of hope, anxiety, depression, suicidality, etc. An example of this could be, if your goal in therapy is to manage/decrease anxiety, I might ask you at the beginning of each session, then again at the end of the session, to rate your level of anxiety to check in on the efficacy of skills and therapeutic support. I may ask you, "On a scale of 0-10 (0 not anxious at all, 10 extremely anxious). This is data, a way we can track goal achievement and progress.
