Getting to know Carol Fox

My name is Carol Fox, LMFT, and I have been in practice for many years, witnessing the evolving need for and acceptance of therapy as a tool for personal growth. Finding the self has many paths, and while numerous therapies have been created, the focus remains the same: discovering the self within the lives we live each day. My approach to therapy is to help find the right path back to the self. I earned my Master's in Counseling from California State University, Sacramento, which laid the foundation for my work in mental healthcare. My approach begins with a life review, exploring hurtful places to uncover unresolved issues that may hinder growth. By focusing on goals and conscious living, we put the past in perspective so that meaningful progress can be made. We always start with the "now"-what brought you to seek help-as the present path provides direction and a starting point. Theoretically, I explore the family system as a tool to identify blocks preventing the self from becoming who it was meant to be. Life presents many challenges, whether trauma or changes in circumstances, and these challenges exist on a spectrum in everyone's life. People willing to work on themselves are most receptive to therapy, or the art of exploring. Even those resistant to growth can benefit by discovering the why, the how, and ultimately, the self. I have been told I have a soothing voice and a welcoming presence. It feels natural to let the client lead, to follow, support, and delve deeply into pain or hurt-but only if the client invites it. I may ask questions or share observations, but the client must do the work; only then is therapy truly useful. My original life plan was to become a school teacher, which I did for eight years. Life then changed-marriage and children happened-and when I was ready to return to teaching, the field was saturated. My desire to work with children led me to become a school counselor, which eventually guided me into mental healthcare.
