Getting to know Carrie Ware-Kawamoto

Hi there, I'm Carrie! I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a Master’s in Marriage and Family Counseling from California State University, Hayward. For over 30 years, I have provided mental health treatment to adolescents and adults, specializing in eating disorders, anxiety, and trauma via telehealth. I utilize Family-Based Treatment, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help my clients improve how they feel and function. I also have lived experience as a person who has recovered from her own eating disorder. My approach I tailor my approach to each client’s needs, drawing on my strong background in Family-Based Treatment for eating disorders, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I focus on uncovering the strengths and positive momentum that every person has but may need help recognizing. My focus I work with adolescents, young adults, and adults from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds. I spent over 20 years delivering mental health services to low-income clients in a public agency in Alameda County, Oakland, California. I am comfortable treating complex cases involving multiple issues such as eating disorders, anxiety, and trauma. My communication style I am a kind, caring, empathetic, and straightforward communicator. I encourage my clients to focus on their strengths and goals while validating their struggles. I have a good sense of humor and enjoy interacting with my clients in a respectful and human way. My journey to mental healthcare I became a therapist over 30 years ago because I found people fascinating and wanted to help relieve suffering—especially since I had a difficult childhood, like many therapists. Through my own therapy, I transformed my pain into a life worth living and healed from an eating disorder.. Through my own therapy, I transformed my pain into a life worth living and healed from an eating disorder.
