Getting to know Cody Elder

Hello! My name is Cody Elder. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with 7 years of experience in primary substance use, dual diagnosis, and primary mental health treatment. I believe the best tool in the therapeutic experience is the relationship and a strong teamwork element to therapy. My approach My therapeutic approach, shaped by my sports background, focuses on strong client relationships and collaborative efforts. I specialize in CBT, DBT, and Psychodynamic therapies, and I incorporate spirituality into my clinical practice. My focus I typically work with clients who are struggling with life transitions, grief, loss of sense of purpose, and needing help in building tools to discover their own capabilities. My communication style I use a very balanced tone when approaching my clients. However, once the relationship is built, don’t be surprised if we begin to dialogue as if we are having a conversation around coffee or food. It can become very light and natural once trust is developed. My journey to mental healthcare I grew up counseling and helping youth and adolescents in my church since I was 16 years old. My passion for helping others led me to obtain a BA in Psychology from CSULB, class of 2017. I then earned my Master’s in Psychology from Vanguard University, class of 2021. After just under 2 years of direct therapeutic service, I became fully licensed in 2023. My goals for you I approach goal setting right from the initial session so we both know where we are aiming and what we want to achieve with our time together. My first session with you During our initial session, expect me to ask questions about how we got here (to therapy), where we want to go, and how we plan to maintain any gains we gather along the way!
