Getting to know Derek Nunn

Hello, my name is Derek Nunn, and I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the state of California. I earned my Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling from Alliant International University. My approach to our collaboration is solution-focused, revolving around you as the expert of your desired outcomes. I use specific questions to help identify and amplify your strengths, skills, and resources, moving you toward your preferred future. Each session is driven by you, as we address your best hopes for each conversation to encourage a respectful collaboration between us. We will also explore increasing psychological flexibility using skills from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I have worked with diverse populations in various settings and programs, including schools, community mental health programs, crisis intervention teams, and outpatient settings. I provide individual and group services to clients ages 8 to 75, both face-to-face and via telehealth platforms. Currently, I have availability to work with individuals ages 18 and older through telehealth only. After 14 years in the fire service, I recognized the need to bridge the gap between public safety and mental health services. In 2014, I transitioned into the mental health field and discovered a passion for helping people of various ages and health needs. Therapeutically, I gravitate toward solution-focused therapy blended with acceptance and commitment work, driven by the hope I carry for others—a quality ingrained in me from my fire service career. If you are seeking court-mandated counseling, letters for emotional support animals, work disability, custody, or other court-related services, I do not provide those and will refer you to providers specializing in those areas. I look forward to working with you to build solutions toward your preferred future.

What should a new client know about working with you?

After the first session when we explore your best hopes for our work together, identify difficult thoughts, feelings, memories, urges, or sensations that in the past you have attempted to move away from or avoid, we will learn and practice strategies, including brief mindfulness exercises, to help you live a more rich, full, and meaningful life based on your true values, in the way you want to show up for yourself, others, and in your community. Our focus will be on changing the relationship to difficult internal experiences, instead of struggling to change, suppress, or ignore them.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.

Derek was very easy to communicate with, even on the first visit. He laid out expectations and a plan to move forward that made sense, and simplified the process, making therapy for a first timer less daunting.
