Erin Cabrera

Psychotherapist
CA
I'm a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. I have just over two decades of experience in both outpatient and inpatient settings. I specialize in helping individuals navigate anxiety, depression, trauma, codependency, and complex family dynamics. My practice is rooted in evidence-based approaches that foster meaningful change and empower clients to reconnect with their inner resilience. My approach is trauma-informed first and foremost, because trauma is widespread and it profoundly impacts everyone it touches, disrupting their sense of safety, impairing their ability to trust, and causing significant harm to physical and mental health. The therapeutic environment should foster safety, empowerment, and choice, because healing can only occur when people feel truly seen, heard, and supported. In addition to being trauma-informed, I have an integrative approach, which means I borrow from multiple therapeutic models instead of limiting myself to just one; this strategy allows me to adapt my treatment plan to my clients' unique needs, strengths, and preferences. My preferred treatment models include: Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT): Supporting clients in identifying maladaptive thought patterns and fostering more adaptive cognitive and behavioral strategies. Psychodynamic: Facilitating insight into unconscious processes, exploring core drives and defense mechanisms, and helping clients deepen self-awareness and move toward self-actualization. Humanistic: Emphasizing empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authentic connection to nurture self-acceptance and personal growth. Existential: Encouraging clients to explore meaning, responsibility, and mortality as part of a richer, more intentional life experience. Mindfulness & Meditation Practices: Helping clients learn and practice staying present in the moment while tolerating difficult emotions.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work best with clients who feel stuck in cycles of anxiety, depression, or unresolved trauma—especially when shaped by painful dynamics like toxic relationships or family-of-origin conflict. Whether you're navigating the aftermath of emotional wounds or seeking clarity in relationships that feel draining or confusing, our work together will focus on fostering resilience, emotional insight, and lasting change. My approach integrates evidence-based therapies—including CBT, ACT, and schema therapy—to help you identify deep-rooted beliefs, untangle patterns that no longer serve you, and reconnect with your sense of agency. You're not just learning tools for coping—you're cultivating a stronger, more grounded version of yourself.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our work together, I prioritize creating a warm, nonjudgmental space where you feel heard, validated, and empowered. I communicate with openness, clarity, and empathy—balancing reflective listening with thoughtful guidance. My tone is attuned to your needs: sometimes gentle and exploratory, sometimes direct and grounding—always respectful and intentional. I view therapy as a collaborative dialogue, and I welcome curiosity, emotion, and complexity into the room. Whether we're unpacking difficult experiences or practicing new skills, my goal is to foster emotional safety and meaningful connection throughout the process.
