Franklin Smith, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Franklin! Greetings! My name is Franklin R. Smith. I am a licensed MFT with over thirty years of experience. I earned my Master’s in Counseling from Pepperdine University. I understand that learned behavior results in patterns that can be positive and life-affirming or maladaptive and negatively impact our self-esteem, happiness, and relationships. I help clients unravel where destructive life patterns come from and empower them to have a more fulfilling life. I have assisted many individuals to rapidly get to the core of personal problems that have kept them from living up to their full potential. My approach I utilize an eclectic strength-based approach incorporating short-term psychodynamic, CBT, humanistic, and family systems theory. My approach focuses on helping clients understand how they defend against painful memories associated with trauma, unresolved grief and loss, abandonment, and other current or past stressors. I help clients understand how suppressed feelings impede the development of a fuller sense of self. When clients can tolerate and express painful emotions, they are freed to grow from the experience and have a more satisfying life. My focus Though I have a special interest in working with young adults, adolescents, and their families, I work with all age groups. Areas of interest include depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, communication, trauma, attachment issues, grief and loss, and relationship conflicts. My communication style I am an empathic and non-judgmental listener. Through the development of a therapeutic alliance, I help clients reach their goals at a tolerable, agreed-upon pace. I meet and accept clients where they are, mentally and emotionally. My journey to mental healthcare In undergraduate school, I studied screenwriting with the goal of writing for film and television. As I pursued the challenging path of breaking into the film business, I was often wrought with anxiety and self-doubt.
